5 Common Home Heating Myths

Homeowners are busy preparing for the winter season by finding ways of controlling home heating costs. Unfortunately, there are many home heating myths. The following are some of the myths that you may have been doing unknowingly all along.

Thermostat Cranking

Many people believe that cranking the thermostat will raise the home temperatures quicker. Misinformed homeowners typically set the thermostat to its maximum so that the house warms up faster. This idea is pure myth since the only result is elevated temperatures beyond desirable and wastage of energy therefore not a real option for saving energy.

Switching to Programmable Thermostat

Although programmable thermostats are highly efficient and convenient, improper usage may increase heating cost. For instance, a programmable thermostat signals the furnace to provide higher temperature to heat your home before you wake up. In the long run, you will note that energy cost is going up. If not programmed well, it will result in wrongful detection of room temperature leading to warming of your home when not needed

Heating your Home at Constant Temperature

Unless you use a heat pump to heat your home, never think that leaving your home heated at constant temperature will reduce heating cost. Setting the thermostat lower at night or when you are away and a little higher when at home save energy.

Replacement of Windows

Replacing windows with energy efficient ones do not save you anything. In fact, it is an expensive option. Energy efficient windows are uneconomical if the primary goal is energy saving. With current windows, seal ducts and air leaks using sealants. Aerosealing is the most proven way to cut down on energy cost by preventing air leaks.

Using the Fireplace as an Alternative

Using firewood is just a fallacy. First of all, wood burns noisily producing smoke. If you probably enjoy the fireplace idea, be sure that it is inefficient. Homeowners must buy firewood that adds to the cost and a huge percentage of the heat produced goes to waste. Unless you are heating the room with the fireplace, the heated air will lose energy as the rest of the home also needs the heat.
