There’s no doubt that A/C maintenance is an essential part of making sure your HVAC equipment is not only functioning at its best, but that it will be able to deliver reliable service for many years to come. Fortunately, with summer coming to a close, now is the perfect time to take care of end of summer air conditioning maintenance. A few quick and easy maintenance tips is all that will be needed to help you get your air conditioner ready for another season of cooling.
Start by checking your air filter. An air filter that is used solely for your cooling system should be changed or washed so that it will be clean and ready for next spring; however, if you use your air filter for heating as well, then taking care of this task now will ensure your heating system has the clean air filter it needs in order to function properly. Of course, a clean air filter is also an important part of making sure your HVAC equipment is able to provide energy efficient service.
Next check the condensate pan as well as the drain line leading to the outside of your home. The condensate pan is designed to collect water that accumulates when your air conditioner is running and the collected water is then disposed of through a drain line; however, the drain line can become clogged. Be sure the pan is empty and the drain line is clear.
Finally, it’s time to turn your attention to your indoor and outdoor units. The inside unit contains the evaporator coils that will remove heat from the air as it passes over it. These coils and fins get dirty and need an occasional cleaning to keep them functioning properly. Wipe the fins and coils gently to remove any dirt. The outside unit can be gently sprayed with a hose. Check around the outside unit to make sure there is nothing obstructing air flow.
