Is A Ductless Split System Right For Me?

There are many types of commercially available HVAC systems in existence. They include; window units, central HVAC and ductless split HVAC systems among others. They all have different selling points and shortcomings, but central HVAC and ductless systems are the most popular. It is interesting to note, however, that the popularity of ductless split HVAC is on the rise for a number of reasons. For one, they are more affordable, easier to install and more practical to use.

How Ductless Split HVAC Systems Work

As the name suggests, the system contains zero ductwork and it’s divided into two parts; evaporator and condenser. The former comes in the form of an indoor wall-mounted unit commonly referred to as the air handling unit. It contains the evaporator coil, a fan and the control system. The condenser is located outdoors either on the wall, roof or on the ground. It consists of the condenser coil, compressor pump, a fan and the refrigerant. The two units are connected to each other via metal pipes carrying the refrigerant back and forth, and electrical cables supplying power to the outdoor unit. Usually, a small hole is drilled through the wall to pass these pipes and cables.

When compressed refrigerant is released from the compressor tank to the evaporator coils, it absorbs heat from air passing over the evaporator coil. As a result, air is cooled and forced back into the room. Heated refrigerant returns to the condenser, where it is cooled and compressed, ready for the next cycle.

Benefits of Ductless Split HVAC Systems

The following are some benefits of a ductless split system:

  • They are quieter, since the noisy component, the compressor, is located outdoors
  • They are easier to install since they do not require ductwork
  • When low temperatures are being experienced, ductless systems can heat a room more effectively than conventional central HVAC systems
  • They are healthier and safer since they do not contain complex ductwork which trap and accumulate dust, pollen, chemicals and other impurities
